When I woke up, I expected to see Edwin gone, and off making breakfast.
Turned out, he was just still there, on the same side, and sound asleep.
Well, I wasn’t sure if he was alive, because he wasn’t moving, and I didn’t see his shoulders heaving, with every breath he took.
I leaned over to check, and sure enough, he was alive.
“YOU WOKE ME UP!!” he shouted.
It made me jump.
“Sorry Edwin!” I squealed, “I didn’t mean to wake you!”
“Well you did.” He grunted.
He was still upset. I thought he was just sick, but I couldn’t be sure.
I left the fort, to go make myself some breakfast since Edwin didn’t.
I got up, and stretched. A big yawn found its way through my throat.
The sky was beautiful, when I looked at it.
I found a big rock, being baked under the sun. It had great potential to be an oven. If only I had an egg… I thought.
I went to go to the “All Around Tree-Ba-Doid” to go get some tasty little fruits. I pulled three down, and then went to go get some Nanaboids.
As I ate, I worried about Edwin.
I worried so much; I pushed my food aside, and went to go check on him.
He was still in the same spot, but his legs were shifted in a different position, so at least he was moving.
“What do you want?” he mumbled.
“What I want it for you to be yourself!” I yelled.
“Excuse me?” he said, sitting up and looking at me confused.
“You heard what I said…” I said, tapping my foot.
“Yes, I did. I’m not deaf,” he said rolling his eyes.
“Well I know, because I’ve been talking to you the whole time we’ve been here.”
“Well, good.” he replied, not knowing what to say.
I walked out, because my temper was raging.
What kind of freak would start suddenly acting like a jerk?
We are adults, not children, and he needed to treat me with some respect!
“EDWIN!!” I yelled.
“WHAT NOW!!!” he screamed at me.
“First, cool your furious temper and I will tell you.” I said not even knowing where I was going with this.
“ Okay… its cold as ice now. Frosty.” He said taking a deep breath.
“Pack your stuff and leave if you are going to be such a jerk. I’m sick of it, and since your not going to tell me why your upset, I don’t even want to hear it.” I grumbled, but acting like the mature one.
“EXCUSE ME? WE CAN’T GET OUT OF HERE! WE ARE STUCK, STUCK LIKE GLUE IN THIS LITTLE CAGE OF A VILLAGE! YOU CANNOT KICK ME OUT OF HERE! WHAT HAPPENED TO STICK TOGETHER? AND YOU REALLY WANNA KNOW WHY I’M SO MAD? DO YOU REALLY?” he bellowed.
“Yes.” I said, staying calm.
He walked away, without answering.
I felt bad for threatening him.
I had to be the good one, so I stepped in, and put myself aside for once.
“Edwin?” I asked nervously.
“What.” He spit.
“You don’t have to tell me why you’re mad. I will leave you alone, I’m sorry.” I said.
I walked away, but he tapped me on the shoulder.
“Jolie? No, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have been such a jerk, you’re right. I really don’t like to fight, it’s just…” he said, taking a breath short.
“What? Just what?” I asked, waiting for him to reply, which took a while.
“I feel like we are going nowhere, and we are just going to be stuck here forever. And I don’t want that. I want to go home, home, home. I want to see Wacksville again, but we will probably never get to, for the rest of our lives. I want to see the world again, and the snow. I want to, just be back home. Where I belong.” He said.
“Me too Edwin, me too.” I said patting his back.
He looked at me shyly, and then went to go pick some fruits of the tree.
He bit the fruit, and then smiled at me, a smile I had never seen before.
It was a mixture of all feelings. Scared, shy, brave.
I needed to step in.
I missed the world too.
I missed everything in it but I didn’t show it.
I wanted to be strong for Edwin, because, even if we were back in Wacksville, I would still be the only thing he had close to a friend.
Did he think I didn’t miss my family?
My dog?
My job?
Did he not think I missed the world?
Did he really?
